The 5 Patterns That Doom Enterprise AI Projects
1. AI as a Checkbox, Not a Strategy
Many C-suite leaders initiate AI projects because a competitor did — or because an investor asked, “What’s your GenAI roadmap?”
I’ve been in rooms where AI was discussed with zero clarity on the business problem it was solving.
In one case, a major life insurance company spent a year building an AI chatbot “to boost lead conversion” but never linked it to the CRM or sales team KPIs. After 14 months and $700,000, it was quietly shut down.

2. You Can’t Build AI on Broken Data

4. Vendor Hype vs Ground Reality
I’ve seen it too many times — slide decks promising:
“99% accurate underwriting decisions”
“70% claim automation”
“$10M cost savings in year one”
But the truth is: AI needs tuning, iteration, and stakeholder buy-in. We worked with a large reinsurer that wanted instant deployment. But when we showed initial outputs, underwriters rejected them.
We paused, brought the underwriters into the training loop, adjusted the model monthly, and achieved 87% acceptance within six months.
It’s slow. But sustainable.

Ask yourself: Is this initiative directly tied to increasing revenue or reducing cost?
If the answer is vague, that’s your first red flag. AI for the sake of AI leads to waste. The best projects are anchored in business KPIs.
I -Do You Have the Right Inputs (Data & Process)?
AI thrives on clean, consistent, and structured data. If your inputs are broken — like PDFs, handwritten records, or siloed systems — then your AI output will be equally flawed. You can’t predict value with poor ingredients.
R -What’s the ROI Timeline and Metric?
Every successful AI project has a clear outcome: lower TAT, increased approval rate, fraud reduction, cost per transaction, etc. If you can’t measure success, you’ll never know when to scale — or when to stop.
G -Is Governance and Compliance Built-In?
In insurance and healthcare, explainability isn’t optional — it’s mandatory. Think about regulators, audit trails, fairness, and model transparency before you launch, not after you fail.
O -Is Your Organization Ready for AI?
This is where most projects break. Your culture needs to trust and adopt the system. If your sales, ops, or underwriting teams are resisting the new tech, it won’t matter how accurate your model is. Adoption trumps performance.
D -Can You Deploy and Iterate Quickly?
AI is not a one-time build. It’s an evolving capability. If your team or vendor can’t deploy in phases, gather feedback, and improve iteratively, you’re just running another POC that dies after the pilot.
If a project doesn’t pass all six of these checks, pause and rethink. AI isn’t a magic wand. But with the right foundation, it can unlock compounding value -fast.
