From Freedom Won to Future Built

An Independence Day look at the India being built in faith, steel, silicon and sunlight.
Every 15th August, we look back. This year, I want to look forward - because for the first time in my working life, the future of this country isn't an aspiration on a poster. It's a construction site, a factory floor, a solar park, and a queue of pilgrims at a railway station. It's physical. You can touch it.
What follows is a view from the ground - not the hype version, the real one.

The pilgrim is the new economic indicator
Start with something we've always had but only recently learned to count: faith on the move.
India today leads Asia in spiritual travel - roughly one in five Indian travellers plans a faith-driven journey this year, more than any other country on the continent. The Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj in 2025 drew over 660 million people, the largest human gathering ever recorded. Ayodhya received 230 million visitors in just the first half of 2025 - more than it saw in all of the previous year.
But here's what the numbers hide, and what I find genuinely moving: the demographic has flipped. Gen Z and young travellers now account for more than half of all journeys to spiritual destinations. Solo women travellers are booking pilgrimage routes. Young professionals treat a weekend in Varanasi the way an earlier generation treated a weekend in Goa. Spirituality has become wellness, identity, and rootedness - all at once.
This matters economically because a pilgrim is not a tourist who happens to visit a temple. A pilgrim generates demand for transport, stay, food, guides, digital services, and local craft - and does so in tier-2 and tier-3 India, where that money changes lives. The rails are responding: 164 Vande Bharat services now run across 274 districts, carrying nearly four crore passengers in FY26 alone - and pilgrimage destinations have recorded some of the strongest booking growth of the year across flights, hotels, and buses. Spiritual travel is one of the few sectors where cultural depth and economic breadth point in exactly the same direction.
The gap - and the opportunity - is that the experience hasn't caught up with the demand. Crowd management, sanitation, digital ticketing, last-mile connectivity, authentic storytelling: this is where the next decade of value sits.
Infrastructure: from catching up to setting pace
For most of my life, Indian infrastructure was an apology. Today it's an argument.
Consider what a single decade has done. The national highway network has grown from 91,287 km in 2014 to over 1,46,000 km - a 61% expansion, with four-lane-and-wider highways more than doubling to 45,516 km. Operational airports have gone from 74 to 165. The metro network has grown from 248 km in five cities to over 1,155 km across 26 cities - now the world's third-largest, carrying more than a crore passengers every day. Rail electrification, stuck around 20% for decades, stands at 99.6%. And the number that says the most about quality, not just quantity: train accidents have fallen from 135 in 2014-15 to 16 in 2025-26, with the indigenous Kavach protection system now rolling out across the network.
The Union Budget for FY27 put ₹12.2 lakh crore into public capital expenditure - with seven new high-speed rail corridors, twenty national waterways, and a record railway outlay of nearly ₹3 lakh crore. Between FY26 and FY30, total infrastructure capex is projected to reach ₹90–100 trillion, roughly 60% higher than the previous five-year period.
Two shifts inside those numbers deserve attention.
First, the private sector is finally stepping in at scale, after a decade in which government money carried nearly the entire load. An Infrastructure Risk Guarantee Fund and reformed development models are designed precisely to crowd private capital in. When private money believes in Indian infrastructure, the flywheel becomes self-sustaining.
Second - and this shift is less noticed but more consequential - the conversation is moving from building assets to managing them. We've laid the expressways and the bridges. Now the question is: who monitors their health? Who predicts failure before it happens? Who ensures a bridge built in 2020 is still safe in 2060? Asset management, digital twins, sensor-based monitoring - this unglamorous layer is where India's infrastructure story matures from volume to intelligence. It's also where engineering firms, technology teams, and government must learn to work as one system.
Manufacturing: the quiet compounding
Manufacturing rarely makes for dramatic headlines, which is exactly why its progress is easy to miss.
Electronics production has grown from ₹1.9 lakh crore in FY15 to over ₹11 lakh crore - nearly six-fold in a decade. India went from two mobile manufacturing units in 2014 to over 300 today. The PLI schemes have drawn more than $25 billion in investment, created over 14 lakh jobs, and enabled exports crossing $160 billion. And in a twist nobody predicted a decade ago, India shipped ₹35,000 crore worth of electronics components to China last year.
The semiconductor story is at its most delicate and most promising stage: multiple fabs and OSAT facilities under construction, made-in-India chips beginning to roll out, and tens of thousands of engineers being trained for an industry that didn't exist here five years ago. We're early. But "early" in semiconductors is where every serious nation had to start.
The honest caveat: manufacturing jobs demand skills our education system doesn't yet reliably produce, and land, logistics, and compliance friction remain real. The gap between announcement and factory-gate output is where the actual work lives.
Agriculture: the oldest sector, learning the newest tricks
Before India built highways or fabs, it had to learn to feed itself - and it's worth remembering that food self-sufficiency was this country's first great act of economic independence. That story is still compounding.
India recorded its highest-ever foodgrain production in 2025-26: 376.5 million tonnes, up 5.3% in a single year, with record output in rice, wheat, and maize. Zoom out and the arc is striking - from 265 million tonnes in 2013-14 to today's figure, while the agriculture budget has grown five-fold to about ₹1.40 lakh crore. A nation that once lived "ship to mouth" on imported grain now holds comfortable buffer stocks and exports to the world.
But the more interesting story is what's changing in the field itself. Drones are spraying crops and mapping plant health with multispectral cameras that spot stress weeks before the human eye can. The Drone Didi initiative is putting thousands of drones in the hands of women-led self-help groups - technology diffusion and rural livelihood creation in one move. Satellite-based crop monitoring, AI-driven advisories, and digital marketplaces are quietly rewiring how a smallholder farms, sells, and gets paid. The AgriStack ambition is UPI's philosophy applied to the farm: shared digital rails - land records, advisories, credit, markets - that any farmer can ride.
The honest picture: farm incomes still lag the rest of the economy, holdings remain fragmented, and climate volatility is the sector's permanent stress test. A record harvest is not the same as a prosperous farmer. But for the first time, the tools reaching the village are the same class of tools reaching the boardroom - and that convergence is new.
Power: the foundation nobody notices until it fails
Here is the statistic I'd frame on a wall: in July 2026, India crossed 300 GW of non-fossil power capacity - more than 54% of our total installed base of 552 GW, and past 60% of our 500 GW target for 2030. We hit the 50% non-fossil milestone in June 2025, five years ahead of our Paris commitment.
In FY26 alone, India added a record 55 GW of clean capacity. Solar has grown from 2.8 GW in 2014 to over 160 GW. And crucially, we're not just installing panels - we're making them: domestic solar module manufacturing capacity has climbed from 2.3 GW to about 172 GW. The convergence is already visible in small, telling moments - in July, India put its first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel cell train on the tracks, a 2,600-passenger trainset that generates its own electricity onboard. Power, manufacturing, and rail in one machine.
Why does this belong in an Independence Day essay? Because energy is the deepest form of independence there is. Every gigawatt of domestic clean power is a barrel of oil we don't import, a supply chain we don't depend on, a factory that can run and a train that can move on Indian sunlight. Power is the invisible substrate beneath every other story in this piece - no expressway, no fab, no digitally-enabled pilgrimage corridor works without reliable electricity.
AI: intelligence, on Indian terms
If power is the substrate of the physical economy, compute is becoming the substrate of the digital one - and here too, something real is taking shape beneath the noise.
The IndiaAI Mission, a ₹10,372 crore national programme, has onboarded over 38,000 GPUs into a shared national compute pool - nearly four times its original target - available to Indian startups, researchers, and academia at deeply subsidised rates. Where comparable capacity on global clouds costs several times more, an Indian founder can now train a serious model without leaving the country or burning the treasury. Sarvam AI has already released open-source models built on this infrastructure, optimised for 22 Indian languages, and a consortium led by IIT Bombay is building a trillion-parameter Indian LLM.
The design choice is worth noticing: rather than the state building data centres, the government empanelled private players - Jio, Tata, Yotta, CtrlS - and subsidised access. It's the same philosophy as UPI: build the rails publicly, let the ecosystem run on them.
The honest picture, as always, has caveats. Nearly all of this runs on imported chips, which is exactly why the semiconductor push in the previous section is not a separate story - it's the same one. And announced capacity means little if founders can't actually book it when they need it. But the direction is unmistakable: India isn't trying to out-spend the AI superpowers. It's making intelligence affordable for a billion people, in their own languages, on shared public infrastructure. That's a distinctly Indian answer to a global question.
Space: the frontier just changed hands
On 18 July this year, a seven-storey rocket built by a Hyderabad startup lifted off from Sriharikota and placed customer payloads into a 450-km orbit seventeen minutes later. With that single flight, Skyroot Aerospace made India only the third country in the world - after the United States and China - where a private company, not a government agency, has reached orbit.
Sit with that for a moment. A company founded in 2018 by two IIT alumni and former ISRO scientists became India's first space-tech unicorn and then put a rocket into orbit - all within eight years, and just six years after the space sector was opened to private players. Vikram-1 can carry 350 kg to low-Earth orbit; Vikram-2, targeting 2027, aims for nearly a tonne. Skyroot says its Hyderabad campuses can build one rocket a month.
The deeper lesson is in how it happened. The rocket was private, but the path beneath it was public: ISRO provided testing facilities, trajectory analysis, and the launchpad itself, while IN-SPACe cleared the regulatory road. It's the same pattern as UPI and the AI compute pool - the state builds the rails, private ambition runs on them. One successful launch is not yet a cadence, and the global small-satellite market is brutally competitive. But a door that was locked for seven decades is now open, and Indian founders are walking through it.
The thread that ties it together
Look at these seven sectors side by side and a pattern emerges. Spiritual travel moves people through the country. Infrastructure carries them. Agriculture feeds them. Manufacturing gives their journeys and cities the physical goods they need. Power runs all of it. AI is becoming the layer that makes each of the others smarter - the bridge that predicts its own maintenance, the pilgrimage corridor that manages its own crowds, the farm that reads its own soil, the factory that catches its own defects. And space extends the whole system upward - the satellites that will map our highways, guide our trains, and watch our crops. None of these is a standalone success story - they're one story, told in seven dialects.
And the pattern beneath the pattern: India is shifting from consuming the future to constructing it. From importing panels to making them. From building bridges to monitoring their heartbeat. From receiving pilgrims to designing their experience.
We are not there yet. Execution gaps are real. Skilling is behind. Urban infrastructure groans. Anyone who works on the ground knows the distance between a budget announcement and a commissioned asset. Optimism without honesty is just marketing.
But this Independence Day, I find myself thinking about the freedom fighters who imagined a country they would never see completed - and realising that we are in a rare position they weren't: we can actually see it being built. In the sensor on a bridge, in the queue at Ayodhya, in the chip rolling off a line in Sanand, in a solar park at noon, in a drone reading a wheat field, in a model that speaks 22 Indian languages, in a startup's rocket rising over Sriharikota.
Freedom, seventy-nine years on, is no longer only something we won.
It's something we build. Every single day.
